No plans to open casino in Pulau Tioman
Pahang MB: No plans to open casino in Pulau Tioman
Pahang state government has no plans to consider applications to open a casino in Pulau Tioman, near Rompin here.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said such matter was never been discussed and would never be given consideration even if there were parties interested to apply for the casino licence there.
“We will never consider or have plans to offer gambling or casino licence on Pulau Tioman. We will never look into such applications and we hope the state government had made its stand clear on the matter,” he said when replying to a supplementary question by Sim Chon Siang (PKR-Teruntum) at the 14th state legislative assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang here today.
Sim had earlier asked the state government on the proposal to offer casino licence to interested operators to start the business on the island and the status of the Pulau Tioman airport in a move to lure more visitors to the island.
Meanwhile, Wan Rosdy said plans to build a new airport on the island was still being discussed between the state government, federal government and East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC).
He said a meeting was held between Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as well as menteri besar of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor early last month but there had yet to be any decision on the matter.
“Johor Menteri Besar (Datuk Osman Sapian) presented a proposal (to build an airport in Mersing, Johor) during the meeting but it was rejected as the priority is now to build an airport here (Pulau Tioman).
“However, there is no decision yet on the implementation of the project. It (construction of a new airport) might be carried out later,” he said.

Navy to rescue stranded tourists on Tioman Island
Navy to rescue stranded tourists on Tioman Island

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has been deployed to rescue 93 tourists who have been stranded on Tioman Island for several days following bad weather and rough seas.
A total of 54 foreign tourists and 39 local tourists have been stranded on the island since Jan 11.
Tioman assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Johari Hussain said Navy ship KD Terengganu is expected to arrive on the island at 10pm Monday (Jan 15).
"Tomorrow morning (Jan 16) at 7.30am, we can start transferring people from the marina," he told The Star.
Mohd Johari also said seven locals will be allowed to board the ship as they had urgent matters to attend to on the mainland.
The monsoon season in Tioman Island starts from October to March every year.
Mohd Johari also said when the monsoon season starts, the Government constantly reminds people of the situation and the risk that they may face on the island.
"During this period, fewer tourists will visit the island due to the weather but there are those who take the risk to go to Tioman with the hope that they would be able to board the ferry when the weather improves," he said.
He said this time, ferry services remained inoperable for a longer period and as such, tourists and locals were unable to leave the island.

Berjaya launches ‘sea shelter’ programme to enhance marine life
Berjaya launches ‘sea shelter’ programme to enhance marine life

Vincent Tan (L) and his son Robin enjoying a dive while witnessing the laying of structures off Pulau
Berjaya Corporation (Berjaya Corp) recently took environmental sustainability to a new level by starting a "Shelter in the Sea for Marine Life" coral reef programme.
The RM200,000 project saw the laying of 67 concrete pipes, ranging from one to two metres in diameter, on the seabed between Berjaya Tioman Resort Dive Centre and Renggis Island off Johor.
Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan, who put on a wetsuit to personally witness the laying of the pipes on the seabed, said the structures will encourage coral growth and also provide protection for marine life.
"We will also plant small corals on the pipes to generate faster growth. I believe it will help enhance Tioman's beauty, protect the fishes and enhance activities for divers here.
"We all like to dive through caves and tunnels, and using these pipes as 'artificial tunnels' could be the closest that one can get to diving through caves," he told reporters here on Saturday.
Tan, who has been diving since 1985, said the results of the project will be gauged over the next few of years.
He said although most environmentalists do not see eye-to-eye on developments at sea, projects like this can be good for the environment if enough efforts were taken.
"Environmentalists are often against development. They should dive more, see and understand for themselves the situation. In fact, a hundred years from now, the water here will still be very nice. I think it is okay if we take efforts to care for this island," he added.
The six-acre project, which is between eight and 11m, is said to provide a suitable habitat for algae and invertebrates, which in turn will create a sustainable ecosystem.
The strategic location of the project site near to the dive centre will also enable experts to monitor coral growth easily and plan further restoration programmes in future.
A survey by Reef Check Malaysia in 2014 found that the condition of coral reefs around Tioman Island is generally in good form, but faces various threats such as warm water bleaching and human factors like illegal fishing and irresponsible tourist behaviour.
Also present during the pipes-laying event were Tan's sons, Berjaya Corp chairman and CEO Datuk Seri Robin Tan and 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Berhad executive director Tan U-Ming.
