Taman Negara entrance fee going up after 70 years



The Taman Negara entrance fee has not been raised for 70 years, so come Jan 1, 2020, the state government will increase it from RM1 to RM10 for children aged below 12, RM30 for those aged 13 – 60 and RM15 for those above 61.

“The revision is part of initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce revenue leakage, aside from increasing income which will help the state become independent.

“Greater revenue will benefit the rakyat through aid and development projects,” said Pahang Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, at a gathering of civil servants at Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah today.

Pahang State Executive Council Members and State Secretary, Datuk Seri Dr Sallehuddin Ishak, were also present.

Wan Rosdy announced he was very pleased with the performance and achievements of Pahang’s civil servants who ultimately hold the success of a government in their hands.

He said that as an opposition state, Pahang must be capable of raising revenue and continuing its success in line with the motto of “Maju Terus Pahang”.

Becoming more attractive to foreign investors and conglomerates, improving arrears collection and introducing taxes that are not burdensome are some of the initiatives being introduced to increase revenue.

国家公园天气热游客减‧水上餐厅13剩8

瓜拉大汉国家公园13家水上餐厅，受到酷热天气的影响，目前只剩下8家继续营业，为游客提供美食。

餐厅业者指出，以往每到周末，便有大量本地游客特地到水上餐厅用餐和观赏沿河风光；随着天气持续炎热，本地人都已减少外出。

虽然还有外国游客，但艾尔尼诺现象带来的干旱，令他们的餐厅搁浅在沙石堆中，生意自然受到冲击。

此外，淡美灵河的水位日益降低，渔夫都难以捕鱼，导致淡水鱼的产量减少，间接影响了餐厅的生意。

水上餐厅业者玛芝娜说，其餐厅的菜肴以淡水鱼为主，以前每天的收入介于300至500令吉，现在才100令吉左右。

“如果情况恶化，看来将有更多水上餐厅关门，暂停营业。”

船夫阿都拉说，这是他担任船夫45以来，首次发生河水浅和船只搁浅或难以行驶的情况。

Logging activity in Ulu Tembeling threatens eco-tourism in National Park



A section of Ulu Tembeling forest found to be used as timber drop-off zones by a logging contractor during a site visit by the Organisation for the Preservation of Natural Heritage.

The aggressive logging activity carried out in Ulu Tembeling over the past three years had threatened the development of eco-tourism in Kuala Tahan National Park, including the habitat of various types of fresh water fish in Sungai Pengau and Sungai Lau.

Despite the fact that the activity was legally permitted, it had nonetheless caused the two rivers, which are also the sources of water in Pahang, to be badly polluted, to the extent of destroying the habitat of fresh water fish, which was once an important tourist attraction to the district.

In fact, it was believed that the logging activity also posed threats to the habitat of wild animals, including elephants and hornbills.

A recent check carried out by Bernama and representatives from the Organisation for the Preservation of Natural Heritage (PEKA), found patches of elephant droppings along the logging, hence proved that the animal was clearly disturbed by the scrupulous loggers.

It was also found that several spots in the jungle had been cleared, believed to be used as timber drop-off zones by a logging contractor based in Kuala Lumpur.

It is learnt that the logging permit was issued to the contractor for a period between June 15 this year and May 15 next year, involving an area of 216.5ha.

Meanwhile, PEKA president Puan Sri Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil called for the activity to be stopped immediately for fear of a more serious impact to the eco-system in the area.

"We can see that the rivers become shallower and badly polluted, and this condition will bring about a more negative impact, especially during the monsoon season.

"This is because the forest, which is supposed to be water catchment area, is declining in size and we can see that the logging activity does more harm than good," she said.

She also urged the state government, through its relevant authorities, to go to the ground and monitor the situation to prevent more damage to the environment which could jeopardise the eco-tourism activities in the National Park area.

At the same time, she said PEKA was also planning to hold a meeting and would invite all the relevant quarters, including tour and travel agency operators, state government and local residents, to discuss the issue.

森林过度开发，导致彭亨河水位下降並日趋干枯，影响自然生態，瓜拉大汉(Kuala Tahan)国家公园也面临遭受破坏的危机。

　瓜拉大汉旅游协会主席加力尔指出，德凯（Tekai）及登伯令森林的树木砍伐及开发活动日渐活跃，导致彭亨河主流的登伯令河水位下降，並出现土地流失现象。

　“尤其是河口处，甘榜末达灵附近的河水已接近干枯。”

引发突发水灾

　加力尔说，除了影响水位，开发活动也导致自然生態受到破坏、鸟类迁移等问题，当豪雨来临时，也引发突发水灾。

　“儘管发展商‘持牌’在特定的森林合法开发，却牵连其他受保护的区域，国家公园为首例。”

　他担心拥有1亿3000万年歷史的国家公园，將因被其他区域的过度开发牵连，继而毁于一旦。

　“国家公园为我国著名的生態旅游胜地，一旦遭受破坏，也將影响旅游业及国家名声。”

　加力尔说，外国旅客千里迢迢到国家公园参观自然生態，但尚未抵达国家公园入口，就看到树木砍伐、罗厘运载树桐等景象，极为讽刺。

　“每日都有200至300辆罗厘，使用进入国家公园的通道，载送树桐。”

往国家公园的著名瓜拉登比灵（Kuala Tembeling）渡头，去年尾遭洪水肆虐后，至今仍然尚未开放，许多经退水之后遗留下的残余废物及泥泞尚未有人到来清除，而靠近渡头的数间餐馆也暂时关门，显得冷冷清清。

由旧渡头搬迁新渡头十余年来，首遭洪水波及的渡头被泛滥的河水淹至梯级入口牌楼，包括处于高势的泊车场及餐厅也遭池鱼之殃，由于瓜拉大汉国家公园里的一些基设施包括数家具规模的度假村旅馆，以及野生动物保护局各种设施遭到洪水百般的蹂躪之后，尚未及时清理及重建，游客也不敢贸然进入国家公园旅游，可见洪水的威力和破坏性，令人难以想象！

昔日光辉不再

自逾20余家传统的的河边经商的华人商店（木屋店）陆续迁出登比灵镇后，就只剩下唯一间靠向渡头的马来咖啡店及一所警亭，让人感觉犹如一个死城，昔日光辉不再，如今再遭到洪水的侵袭之下，更显得冷冷清清，来往人数，屈指可数。

瓜拉大汉国家公园遭遇自1971年以来最严重的水灾，至少120名国內外游客和员工受困在公园內，必须出动直升机賑灾。

Mutiara度假村总经理在而连突大操场等候直升机时说，该度假村有84位游客受困，所幸全部人都安然无恙。

“这是43年以来最严重的水灾，以前度假村也不会淹水，这次餐厅却被水淹没。”

须出动直升机救援

他指出，除了消拯局的船只和直升机参与救援以外，该度假村也安排巴士让游客返回吉隆坡。

根据而连突賑灾中心的数据，已確认的受困游客有102人：大马-13成人9儿童、荷兰-13成人3儿童、英国-9成人、法国-13成人5儿童、瑞士-2成人、澳洲-2成人、阿拉伯5成人5儿童、加拿大-2成人、罗马尼亚-4成人、比利时-2成人2儿童、德国-4成人2儿童、挪威-4成人1儿童及捷克-2成人。

被困在其他度假屋的游客和员工人数则不详。

另一方面，关丹空军直升机今日中午也把一名住在乌鲁淡美灵甘榜瓜拉萨的孕妇哈丽玛，送到而连突医院。

而连突(Jerantut)县议会为打造而连为公园中的城市，除了在市郊进行多项美化工作外，同时也不忘致力宣传而连突多个大自然景点，以让外地游客能够轻易掌握旅游指南。

而连突可谓是个得天独厚的旅游区，如闻名世界的国家公园、德甘农业公园、哥打哥兰宜万年洞、三番港瀑布及奇奥谷高尔夫球场等多个生態旅游。

县议会在此间距离而连突市中心仅有1公里的主要三岔路口附近（东姑阿都拉王储清真寺）对面竖立一个巨型且令人耳目一新的旅游告示牌，牌上的图表非常鲜明，如具代表性的大汉山、伐木舟、旧街场大钟楼、邮政局旧址、酒店及i-City 休閒公园等。

旅游告示牌上方则装置了12个城市电子时钟，以让游客掌握国际时间，这12个时钟除了马来西亚之外，其余的计有马尼拉、东京、悉尼、墨西哥城、迈亚密、里约热內卢、吉达、杜拜、喀布尔、哥伦波及曼谷。

另一个告示牌则安装在新街与旧街交替处的交通圈马路围墙上，告示牌除了概括而连突县的面积分布图之外，同时也作出而连突县的各族人口比例。

Where city dwellers go to farm

There is something humbling about growing up in a small town which is known to the outside world as a district covered in tropical forest, where villagers still fear visits from tigers in their backyards.

A less well-known neighbour of Temerloh of ikan patin-fame and Kuala Lipis which produced the country's most popular female singer, Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Jerantut offers serenity to nature lovers like no other.

Ask locals where you can go to enjoy a refreshing splash in the waters of Sungai Pahang and they can easily give you a number of options.

There's Lata Berkoh, the river which schoolteachers cross to teach in the Orang Asli schools inside Taman Negara. Or Lata Besin, where you can picnic with family and friends.

Not a fan of the water? No worries, as Jerantut still has a long list of charming attractions for the thrill seeker in you.

Reach the highest point in Peninsula Malaysia by climbing Mount Tahan and learn about the secret life of bats in the Kota Gelanggi cave complex.

Ikan patin may be associated with Temerloh but Jerantut is never short of freshwater fish.

It is either freshly caught from the river or harvested in the growing freshwater farming industry in the district.

Locals accept only the best ikan patin masak tempoyak and expect the dish to be served at every wedding.

The phrase "everybody knows everybody" holds true here. Just mention the name of your father or mother and the kind makcik at the nasi campur stall will gladly give you a discount because she knew your parents from school.

When I was a teenager, people could only shop at the row of shoplots in front of the bus stand. Nowadays, there is even a big supermarket next to my housing area.

Many non-locals are buying land and developing farming and poultry businesses here. It only takes about two-and-a-half hours to travel from KL to Jerantut, making it a great place to have a farm.

A friend of mine makes weekly trips from Kuala Lumpur to Jerantut to harvest vegetables on his small farm and sells them at one of KL's Sunday markets. He said farming has given him a new appreciation of nature.

Having grown up in Jerantut, I could not agree more. I hope this trend of city dwellers coming back to nature (especially in Jerantut) will continue grow.

My late grandmother used to own a plot of land here, where she and my mother and aunts would tap rubber trees and plant vegetables to sell at the market.

I heard many tales of encounters with the famed Pak Belang and snakes.

Even though the land was converted into a housing area nearly 10 years ago, every time I pass by the "Welcome to Jerantut" signboard that faces a block of stone that used to be a part of the kitchen of my late grandmother's house, I would be reminded of her and the simple communal life that I used to live before I moved to Kuala Lumpur to chase my dreams.
